We do not know what equipment we have, where it is, or when it expires

Time goes on locating equipment before it is needed, service and expiration dates are found late or found by an inspector, and nobody can answer a straightforward question about what the department owns.

Technology approaches

Asset and inventory management

One record of what the department owns, where it is assigned, and what is due when.

Before you buy

  • Cost the tags, scanners and mounting hardware, not only the software. On an inventory project they routinely outweigh it.
  • The initial inventory build is staff hours and it is the cost most departments miss entirely.
  • Ask what happens to the record when a piece of equipment moves between apparatus at 0300.

RFID and barcode tracking

Scanning rather than typing, so the record survives contact with a busy shift.

Apparatus and compartment checks

The daily check producing a record rather than a clipboard.

PPE lifecycle tracking

Issue, cleaning, repair, inspection and retirement, against the individual set.

Controlled substance tracking

Custody and reconciliation for the drugs that have to be accounted for.

What departments are asking

Mutual Aid

Has anyone integrated ESO with First Due?

Running ESO for EMS records and looking at First Due for fire. Both vendors say it is supported. Looking for someone who has actually run it in production.

How is your NERIS migration actually going?

Vendor says we are ready. Our data says otherwise. Curious whether anyone has completed a clean migration and what they had to fix first.
