Accountability becomes harder as the incident grows

Manual accountability systems can work extremely well, but complexity increases quickly as additional alarms, mutual-aid companies, divisions, groups, tactical channels and relief crews are added.

Technology approaches

Digital command boards

The tactical worksheet on a screen, holding assignments, divisions and benchmarks in one place.

Before you buy

  • Must work when the tablet loses connectivity. Ask what the offline behavior is.
  • Mutual aid companies not in your CAD are the hard case — ask specifically about them.

Electronic accountability

Personnel tracked by tag, device or reader rather than by passport and memory.

Assignment tracking

Which company is working where, on what objective, and for how long.

SCBA and personnel integration

Air status and telemetry reported into the accountability picture rather than read over the radio.

What departments are asking

Mutual Aid

What digital command or accountability system has actually survived a large working incident?

Not what demonstrated well. What did the IC actually use, and what did the aides use? How much information had to be entered by hand while the incident was running? What happened when connectivity degraded? Did mutual-aid companies fit into the system, or did they end up outside it? What manual backup did you keep? And knowing what you know now, would you deploy it again?
